A South Devon Therapist — About Me

My name is Nigel Ohlson. I’m a qualified counsellor/psychotherapist & JNC (Joint Negotiating Committee) professional Youth Worker practising in South Devon. I work with people of all ages but specialise in working with adolescents. I am qualified in a number of approaches, including Integrative Counselling and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I am also experienced in delivering Adventure Therapy based programmes. See more about these therapies on the 'What I offer' page.

I have lived in Devon for most of my life and brought up my family here. Currently I live in Brixham, but my work has taken me all over the world. I am a lover of the outdoors, and have been fortunate enough to have built my career around adventurous activity and personal development and wellbeing.

I believe that building a strong and trusting relationship with my clients is at the heart of successful therapeutic outcomes.

Qualifications and professional affiliations in mental health work

I am a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and The British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), and as such am bound by the Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

I hold an Advanced Diploma in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling, a Post Graduate diploma in Youth and Community work and a Master’s degree in research into therapeutic work with hard to reach young people. I have also trained to degree level with the CPCAB (Counselling & Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body) who are the only awarding body in Europe to specialise in the field of counselling.

I receive regular supervision from a BABCP (British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies) accredited clinical psychologist and a person centred therapist.

The majority of my Counselling and Psychotherapy clients are young people, I specialise in this area, as this is the group that my professional career has been focused upon since starting as a residential manager for the National Autistic Society, following this I took on the role of adolescent Social Work team leader for Devon Social Services, and then a change of path to become the Senior Professional Youth worker and advanced practitioner for Torbay council. I am however very experienced in adult counselling, and if you believe that you might benefit from an active and dynamic approach that places great emphasis on collaboration and the importance of a strong therapeutic relationship then I may be the therapist for you?

Can I help you or a young person you know?

If you think I may be able to help you, or any young person you are responsible for, please feel free to contact me by email or by phone on 07712706680. I'll be pleased to hear from you. Further details can be found on my Practicalities page.
